The Art of Sculpting Snow is scheduled to take place in Driggs, Idaho mid-January and is a part of the Teton Valley Great Snow Fest. ” Stomping Day” is anticipated to take place on Jan. 10 from 2- 6 p.m. This is when the community comes out in force and helps to create the sculpting blocks. Stomping Day will be followed by an after-party hosted by the TWR Grill 5-7 p.m.
New SnowScapes coordinator Kristin Ladd is very excited to announce the confirmed teams who will be publicly creating large scale sculptures (for four straight days and nights!) starting on Jan. 14th. The public is invited to visit downtown Driggs and view the process of sculpting snow during this time. On Saturday, January 18th, the finished sculptures are celebrated, appreciated and voted on by the public and by the arts community for cash prizes. The SnowBall gala extravaganza takes place that evening in Driggs and features live music, dancing and an opportunity to dress up in festive attire.
Sculpting teams are made up of “locals” and regional artists. Home teams include: Mountain Storm headed by Michael Hoffman, Frostbite headed by local Pierre Bombardier, Snow Be Doo headed by Greg Geffner, The SnowDrifters headed by Ralph Mossman and Shanan Savoy, and Road to Oz headed by Doug Cassidy. Visiting teams coming from Laramie, Billings, and Kellogg and include: Team Wyoming headed by Alison Arnold, Three Wise Guys headed by Karl Schmit, North Idaho Snow Sculpting headed by Barb Dunham and our most recently registered team, headed by Billy Dow. SnowScapes is seeking one more sculpting team and a lot of people to show up on the “Stomping Day.” The event also features free hands-on artistic and scientific activities for children on site. SnowScapes is put on by the Downtown Driggs Community Association, with heavy support from the Teton Arts Council, City of Driggs, Teton County, RM Concrete, Sutton Excavation and numerous business sponsorships from within our community including major sponsorships from Huntsman Springs, Peaked Sports, Bangkok Kitchen, Grand Valley Lodging, and the Pines Motel. The public community can participate by coming out to stomp (keep an eye out for posters!) and by purchasing wonderful greeting card sets depicting last years sculptures, (photographed by local pros) available at the Driggs City Center, and on the SnowScapes website: www.driggssnowscapes.org where the most up to date info can also be found. “Like” our Facebook page: Driggs Snowscapes.
